The Governors

ANDY CARTER - LA Governor; HONORARY TREASURER

Andy was appointed LA governor in 2019, and from 2020 has taken up the role of Honorary Treasurer. He is a Chartered Accountant by trade, and has worked in IT and Communications for many years post-qualification.

Originally from Lancashire, he has steadily made his way south via Birmingham, London and Woking, before settling in Dorking in 2011, where he can regularly be found on his bicycle dreaming of Flanders and Lombardy.

He has a son, who is currently in Yr 4 at St. Joseph's.

Francis Cluett - Foundation Governor

 

Francis was appointed a foundation governor in 2018. Francis is a chartered civil engineer. Originally from the Midlands, he has lived in Dorking since 2001. He has a daughter and a son, both past pupils of St Joseph's and St Andrew's in Leatherhead.


 

Michael McGarrity- PARENT GOVERNOR

Michael, born in Downpatrick, Co. Down, began his career as a semi-professional footballer while studying, later representing Northern Ireland at Youth International level. He completed a BSc with QTS in Science Education at Liverpool John Moores University in 2009 and began teaching at De La Salle High School, where he also became a professional scout for Everton FC. He gained a Master’s in Education and completed the Catholic Teaching Certificate in 2012. 

He has since held teaching and leadership roles in Liverpool, Sutton and Northern Ireland. Since moving to Surrey in 2021, he has worked across Primary, Secondary and SEND settings and is now Assistant Headteacher at Christ’s College, Guildford. He completed the NPQH in July 2025.

Michael has three children at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Dorking, and one at St Andrew’s, Leatherhead.

PETER EVANS - FOUNDATION GOVERNOR

Pete lives in Dorking with his wife and 4 children, the 3 oldest of whom are all at the school.  Pete studied law at university before being called to Bar in 2006. He quickly realised that practising law was not what he really wanted to do, so had a complete career change and went to work in the Emergency Response Department for the British Red Cross in London.  Pete worked there for several years before embarking on his current career as a Police Officer.  He has professional experience of serious and complex investigations and safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children.  He was appointed as a Foundation Governor in July 2022.

 Maria O'Neil - Parent Governor

Maria is a parent of four children, all of whom have attended or currently attend St Joseph’s Catholic School. She works as an Administrator at St Joseph’s Church, supporting the parish community with dedication and care. Maria has a strong commitment to helping others and serving the wider community. She is fluent in Italian, having studied in Rome where she focused on Italian language and culture. As a governor, she is passionate about supporting the school’s mission of learning and growing together in the light of God’s love, and is dedicated to helping every child feel valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

LESLIE MARUZIVA - CHAIR; FOUNDATION GOVERNOR 
 

Leslie Maruziva's career has been within high- and low-end roles across the private and public sectors.

Post his MBA, he worked in the banking and Foreign Direct Investment sectors before joining one of Europe's leading civil engineering companies.

Leslie lives in North Holmwood and has two children who both attended St Joseph's School. He recently completed an Executive Leadership programme from Said Business School. He is a confessed TV sports addict and enjoys running and community-based projects in his spare time. 

Kathia Thornton - Foundation Governor

Kathia brings a background in Psychology and HR leadership experience across public and private sectors internationally.

After her MBA, she held training leadership roles in Europe and has governance experience within early years education. Kathia has a strong interest in children’s wellbeing, nurturing faith and values, with a focus on great service. She also enjoys dancing and Mexican food.

Both of her children studied at St. Joseph’s, and she is also part of the Parish Team. Kathia was appointed Governor in October 2025.
