British Values at St Joseph's 

At St Joseph's, we actively promote the fundamental British Values as part of our curriculum and school life. These values help children develop into respectful, responsible, and active members of society. We encourage all pupils to understand and appreciate these important principles through their learning, relationships, and everyday experiences.

Democracy

Democracy means that everyone has a voice and that each person's opinions and ideas are valued. We teach children the importance of listening to others, sharing their thoughts respectfully, and working together to make decisions. Across the school, pupils have opportunities to vote, take part in discussions, and contribute to school life through activities such as the School Paliament and The Lily Squad. By learning about democracy, children begin to understand how decisions are made fairly and how they can positively influence the world around them.

The Rule of Law

The Rule of Law helps children understand why rules are important and how they keep us safe, happy, and respectful of one another. In school, we have clear expectations and routines that help create a positive learning environment. Pupils learn that rules apply to everyone and that there are consequences when rules are not followed. Through this, children develop a sense of responsibility and learn the importance of fairness, honesty, and making good choices.

Individual Liberty

Individual Liberty is about understanding our rights and freedoms while recognising that we are responsible for our own actions. We encourage children to make choices, try new experiences, and develop confidence in expressing themselves. Pupils are supported to make decisions about their learning and interests in a safe and nurturing environment. We help children understand that freedom comes with responsibility and that everyone should be able to feel safe, valued, and respected.

Mutual Respect

Mutual Respect means treating others as we would like to be treated ourselves. We teach children to be kind, considerate, and understanding of other people's feelings, experiences, and viewpoints. Respect is at the heart of our school community, and we encourage positive relationships between pupils, staff, parents, and visitors. By promoting mutual respect, we help children develop strong social skills and create a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We celebrate the rich diversity of our school and wider community. Children learn about different cultures, religions, and beliefs within our RE branch of Dialogue and Encounter branch. We encourage pupils to be curious, open-minded, and respectful towards others, even when their views or experiences may differ from their own. By developing tolerance and understanding, children learn to appreciate diversity and recognise the value that different people bring to our society.
