Therapy Dog

Meet Fern – Our Therapy Dog

Fern is our much-loved school therapy dog and an important part of our wellbeing team. She works alongside staff to help create a calm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Therapy dogs like Fern are specially trained to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support. Spending time with Fern can help reduce anxiety, encourage positive interactions, and improve focus and confidence.

Children may meet Fern in a range of ways — through small group sessions, reading activities, or simply enjoying a calm moment together. For many pupils, time with Fern helps to lift their mood, build confidence, and develop empathy and responsibility.

Fern’s presence in school has had a wonderful impact on our children. Whether she’s offering a quiet paw of reassurance, listening to a story, or greeting pupils with a wagging tail, Fern reminds us all of the importance of kindness, calmness, and connection.

Impact:

Having Fern at St Joseph’s has a positive effect on children in many ways:

· Reduces anxiety and stress, helping children feel calm and secure

· Builds confidence, especially for those nervous about reading or social interactions

· Encourages social interaction, communication, and empathy among pupils

· Supports emotional wellbeing, helping children develop resilience and self-regulation

Fern is much more than a school pet – she is a valued member of our community who helps our pupils feel happy, supported, and ready to learn.
