Pre-teaching at St Joseph

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we want every child to feel confident and ready to learn. One of the ways we support this is through pre-teaching – a strategy where key ideas, vocabulary, or skills are introduced before a main lesson. Pre-teaching is just one of the many ways we ensure that every child has the tools and confidence to succeed in their learning journey.

Pre-teaching gives children the chance to explore important concepts in a smaller, more focused setting. This early introduction helps them feel prepared, understand key terms, and build the confidence they need to take part fully in whole-class learning.

We use pre-teaching to support children who may need a little extra help getting ready for a new topic, as well as to give all pupils a shared foundation of understanding. By giving children this “head start,” we see increased focus, motivation, and engagement during lessons.

Impact

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, pre-teaching helps our children feel confident, prepared, and ready to learn. By introducing key ideas, vocabulary, and skills before the main lesson:

· Children gain a head start, so they feel confident to join in and contribute

· Pupils are more focused and motivated, knowing what to expect in the lesson

· Learning becomes more enjoyable, as children can fully understand and take part

· It gives extra support to those who need it, helping every child achieve their potential

Pre-teaching at St Joseph’s ensures that every child is set up for success, building confidence, engagement, and a love of learning.
