Prayer & Spirituality

Prayer and reflection is part of the rhythm of our school day. We make time each day to come together to give thanks to God and to pray for our own needs and those of others. Our older children enjoy playing a central role in these acts of worship. Children learn our school prayer as well as traditional prayers; they also compose their own prayers and we provide opportunities for personal prayer and meditation.

Each week children participate in whole school and key stage liturgies and class-based Celebration of the Word.

Children are also offered opportunities to join together in prayer, for example lunchtime Rosary Groups in October and May and Stations of the Cross during Lent.

We follow the seasons of the Church’s year and offer opportunities for parents to join us in prayer at key times of the year, such as Advent.

St Joseph's School Prayer

Visio Divina

This is a method of praying we use with children, which allows them the time and space to reflect spiritually.

Translated from Latin, visio divina means “divine seeing.” It's the practice of praying with a sacred image or work of art. By incorporating art into prayer, visio divina invites us to bring our sense of sight as well as our imagination into our relationship with God.

Older children sometimes lead this form of prayer, sometimes following the outline below. Children are invited to verbally contribute or respond how they wish.
