Catholic Social Teaching

At St Joseph’s, Catholic Social Teaching is incorporated into our curriculum. Children are asked to put their faith into action and reflect on how their learning enables them to do so. Catholic Social Teaching underpins the essence of our daily school life.  We continue to use the CAFOD Catholic Social Teaching resources and the animal mascots to support the children’s understanding of principles.

We have named these mascots our ‘Faithful Friends’.

Here are our Faithful Friends and how we think about what they teach us in our school.

Sofia the Sloth: Stewardship

Sofia helps us to remember that we need to care for the many gifts that God has given to us. These include our environment, our own talents and other resources.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • 'Eco Leaders' who work on environmental projects
  •  Sofia the Sloth signs around our school to remind us to turn off lights, close doors to keep the heat in (when it's cold) and on our recycling bins.
  • White board pen recycling
  • Clothes Bank

Patariki the Penguin: Participation

Patariki reminds us that we live in community with others, growing together. It is important that we join in.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • We are all invited to join together in prayer during Liturgies both in class and as a whole school.
  • We engage with our learning and with others around us, remembering that we are 'Working Together in the Light of God's Love.
  • Patariki often joins us on school trips to remind us that we should join together and make the most of our new experiences.

Shristi the Sun Bear: Solidarity

Shristi helps us to remember that we must recognise others as our brothers and sisters and actively work for their good.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • During Lent, we have Fundraising Fridays. This is where the Y6 children choose different charities to fundraise for.
  • We pray for those who need our care during our Liturgies and often in our spontaneous prayer sessions.
  • We allow children to think of ways in which they can show others they care, beyond our school community, and we support with their ideas.

Chikondi the Giraffe: The Common Good

Chikondi reminds us that what we do affects everyone. When we make decisions, we should think about the good of everyone.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • We all follow the school rules, so that we can think about what is best for everyone in our actions.
  • We think of others when we pray
  • We think about ways we can reach out to our community and spread the common good.
  • We make cards for the local community throughout the year.

Luc the Deer: Human Dignity

Luc reminds us that each of us is made in God’s image. This means that everyone is special. We should treat every person the same way we want to be treated.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • We treat everyone with respect at St Joseph's and celebrate different cultures and religions.
  • We celebrate our talents and achievements at our weekly Celebration Assembly.
  • During our Liturgies and Worships we think about how we can treat those around us with dignity.
  • We are reminded of the importance of treating people with respect during 'Anti-Bullying' week.

Daisy the Dove: Peace

Daisy reminds us that it is important to keep working to build a more peaceful world and to think of ways in which we can bring peace to our lives and to the lives of those around us.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • We pray for peace in our Liturgies and Worships, particularly for those affected by war and conflict.
  • We celebrate 'International Day of Peace'
  • We reflect and think about how we can bring peace to those in our community and in our school through our actions.

DJ the Dolphin: Distruptive Justice

DJ helps us to remember that we should make sure that everyone gets their fair share and is treated equally.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:.

  • We think about this during our 'Fair Trade' fortnight where each class focusses on one area linked to fair trade.
  • We are a fair trade school and promote the use of fair trade products.
  • In our playground we share fairly, and our playground pals help us to do this.

Sid the Sheep: Subsidiarity

Sid helps us to remember that everyone has important ideas and knows what is best for their families and communities. They need to have a say in decisions which affect them.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:.

  • The Lily Squad listens to our class ideas and brings them to a meeting where they can be shared and heard.
  • In Year 4, we go on a trip to the Houses of Parliament where we can see where important ideas are shared and listened to.
  • In our weekly Wednesday Worship led by the children, we listen carefully to the views of others.

Poppy the Popokotea: Preferential Option for the Poor

Poppy reminds us that we should think first about the needs of people who need help the most.

Some of the ways we do this at St Joseph's include:

  • We pray for those who are most in need, thinking about our school community and beyond.
  • Throughout the year, we fundraise for charities which help some of the poorest communities in our world.

We have a special CST certificate which is awarded to children to celebrate something they have done which is 'above and beyond' and linked to one of the CST principles.
